Burgundy hair is all the rage right now, and honestly how can it not be? It’s such a deep rich hair color, highly aesthetically pleasing, and it makes a bold and beautiful statement.

As the daughter of a hair colorist and stylist, we have dyed my hair many different shades of deep burgundy, red, black cherry, plum, you name it, so I know how it goes.

If you’re thinking about making the change but you’re worried about a few things, here are the answers to questions you might have.

How long does burgundy hair color last?

Everyone wants to know…does burgundy red hair fade? The short answer is, well, yes.

Out of all the colors my hair has been dyed, deep burgundy has been the one hardest to keep up with.

For me, it would start to fade after about 2 weeks. It would still be pretty rich in color at that point, but not as rich as the first 2 weeks.

By 4-5 weeks my hair has usually faded to copper.

Your results will depend on your hair type and the way you treat your hair.

Here’s what you can do to prolong your deep burgundy hair color:

  1. Wait 2 days after getting hair dyed to wash it (other than when you are washing the dye itself out in the initial process).
  2. Don’t wash your hair every day. Try to go as long as you can between washes. Dry shampoo can help you keep your hair fresh on the in-between wash days.
  3. Use sulfate-free shampoo. Shampoo with sulfates in it strips the color from your hair.
  4. Avoid too much heat styling. I noticed that the more I was using a blow dryer on my hair, the faster my color would fade.
  5. Find a shampoo and conditioner made especially for red hair. They help keep the color looking vibrant and bright for a longer time. The one I linked here has red pigment in it so you have red being infused into your hair every time you wash it.
  6. Keep up with getting healthy trims when you need it. The bottom of the hair has been dyed many times over and sometimes doesn’t hold the dye as well.

Will dark brown hair dye cover burgundy?

Sometimes things just don’t work out. Maybe you won’t like it at all, and that’s ok.

You can certainly cover it with brown dye.

Make sure the brown is darker than the shade of burgundy. If it’s lighter, it will not show up and you will still have burgundy hair.

I recommend having a hair stylist do it so it doesn’t become damaged and over-processed. A good hair salon will offer color correction services.

And if you insist on a lighter shade of brown than what the burgundy was, definitely talk to your hair colorist about it.

It is possible but it will have to be bleached first to lighten it up before dying it the lighter brown.

The condition of your hair will have to be checked before that to see if it could handle all of that.

If you need to minimize the damage, stick with brown darker than the burgundy shade.

What skin tone suits burgundy hair?

Burgundy hair complements all skin tones. The best way to find the shade of burgundy that goes well with your skin tone is to look at your skin’s undertones.

If you have cool undertones, stick with a burgundy that leans more toward the cooler purple side than the warmer red side.

And if you have warm undertones, go with a warmer burgundy with more red in it.

If you’re not sure if you have warm or cool undertones, look at your veins. If they appear very blue, you have a cool undertone, and if they look green you have a warm undertone. If they are blue-green, you have a neutral undertone.

Which is the best burgundy hair color?

There are all different shades of burgundy hair, ranging from light to dark and bright to subdued.

Cherry cola hair color is the most loved burgundy shade of the moment.

It’s almost like black cherry hair but a little lighter and closer to brown than black.

This hot trend is gracing social media everywhere.

It’s one of those burgundy shades that seems to look good on every skin tone.

It also won’t clash with a lot of other colors, so you don’t have to limit your wardrobe.

Bonus that it goes right along with the cherry cola nail trend.

What color complements burgundy hair?

Burgundy hair looks really pretty on its own, but it also looks amazing when combined with other colors.

You can try burgundy highlights on black hair. Black hair and burgundy highlights just go together.

The pops of burgundy throughout black hair make the hair look beautiful, edgy, trendy, and modern.

Blonde with burgundy is another option. While this may not be your first thought of colors that go with each other, there is something striking about the way they look together.

You can put burgundy highlights in blonde hair or blonde highlights in burgundy hair. Both are beautiful.

If you want to make it really funky, only make the bottom or top half of your hair burgundy, whether it’s blonde or black.

When you wear your hair up, you will see all the red underneath. It also creates a cool effect when it’s down.

One of my favorite ways to combine colors that I’ve seen is when people part their hair in the middle and dye each side a different color.

One side black and one side burgundy would be an amazing look to try.

So what do you think? Would you do it? If you are loyal to a hairstylist, have a consultation with them to discuss your thoughts and concerns.

Some dye brands have virtual try on options on their websites, so maybe check that out too. Just upload your picture and play around with different hair colors.

If you like what you see and hear, go for it! A new hair color is such a thrilling part of life, if you ask me.
