If your style includes a little edge, you’re probably into goth makeup looks. The best part about it is that you can achieve that gothic look in ways you may not have thought of.
When we hear gothic, we immediately think of black. While this is the heart of it, black can be mixed with other colors or you can use colors close to black with a tint of something else.
It’s a fun way to add a twist to the old tried and true heavy black eyeliner and eyeshadow.
Goth Makeup Look Essentials
To create goth makeup looks, here are the basic essentials you need:
- Urban Decay 24/7 Eyeshadow Compact – Award-Winning & Long-Lasting Eye Makeup – Up to 12 Hour Wear – Ultra-Blendable, Pigmented Color – Vegan Formula
- NYX Professional Makeup Jumbo Eye Pencil, Blendable Eyeshadow Stick & Eyeliner Pencil – Black Bean
- NARS Lipstick – Opulent Red
You can add to this list of course, but with these basics you can create the overall goth makeup looks you’re going for.
Black Goth Makeup Looks
We have to start with black, of course.
As a goth girl at heart, I’m not sure there’s anything I love more than a good black eyeshadow. One would think it might be too much because it’s the darkest color there is, but it actually looks very high fashion.
You don’t even really need eyeliner to create your look. You can just use your black eyeshadow to line underneath your eyes, add black to the corner for a bit of a wing, and over the eyelids.
Blend it until the black gently fades at the edges.
It is dark enough to indulge a gothic soul but also still appropriate for the office as it comes out looking quite beautiful.
And don’t forget about the core all every goth makeup looks: fully and thickly lined eyes with black eyeliner.
This looks beautiful and edgy enough to stop here, but you can add to it as well by using different eyeshadows, mascaras, faux lashes, and adding pops of color.
For a thicker black line, use a thicker black eyeliner pencil, like the Artisan L’uxe Beauty Velvet Jumbo Eyeliner Pencil which also comes with a smudge tool on the opposite side to help you smoke out your eyeliner fast.
Purples and Pinks
Purple makes a great color in any goth makeup looks. You can find beautiful shades of purple that are so close to black that you can barely tell the difference.
They add depth to the look because when it is blended the outer edges look a bit lighter and brighter, and so beautiful. The purple tint adds some softness but still looks goth.
You could even go with a lighter purple eyeshadow and still give goth vibes. Pair it with the blackest black mascara and black eyeliner. Add some darker purple to the corners and crease if desired.
You wouldn’t necessarily think of pink when it comes to goth makeup looks, but pastel goth is trending and you could totally add rosy pinks to your goth looks.
Add it to eyeshadow looks that use black or purple eyeshadow, or both. You can blend it out around the edges of the darker eyeshadow to give it a pink glow type of effect.
Use black eyeshadow for the main part of the lid. Then starting in the middle of the lid go over it with pink or purple and continue slightly past the point where the black ends.
If you want, you can skip the black eyeshadow altogether and use different shades of purple to create dark shadows around the highlighted areas.
A good eyeshadow palette to use for a look like this is the Colourpop Enchanted Eyeshadow Palette with all of its beautiful and highly pigmented vibrant purples and pinks.
You can create a gradient effect by using a pale shade of purple on the inner corner of the eyelid, a darker shade of purple in the middle and a very dark shade of purple in the outer corner and crease.
It will look gorgeously goth but versatile enough for anything.
If you wanna get a little funky, you can add extra black eyeshadow underneath the eyes with a pale color on the lids and purple in the creases.
Silvers
Silvers and grays are just lighter versions of black and can achieve unique goth makeup looks for sure.
You can find blue tinted silvers and green tinted silvers that look amazing for gradient looks or alone.
A really pretty eyeshadow palette to create this look that is also gentle on your skin is Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips Custom Eye Enhancing Eyeshadow & Eyeliner, Smoky Eyes, Dermatologist Tested. It has an array of light, chrome silvers to darker, charcoal shimmers for the perfect goth glam smoky eye.
Nothing like a beautiful shimmery silver to wear with your black eyeliner and lashes. The silver on the lids will make the lashes stand out and look even darker.
And if you really want to be adventurous, get creative and try something new, like the CHARMACY Duochrome Eyeshadow, Insane Shifters Chameleon Eyeshadow. It’s a wild duochrome eyeshadow that shifts from purple to green, giving interesting evil villain vibes.
This is another great choice if you’re going for some goth glam makeup.
Reddish Browns
Believe if or not, reddish brown has a place in the goth makeup world.
Especially when it leans more to the red side. Black lined eyes with red eyeshadow and lips can totally pass for gothic.
The red around the eyes gives it the eery vibes us goths crave, and the red lips with it packs the rest of the punch.
A little reddish brown eyeshadow behind beautifully (and heavily) lined eyes makes your lashes pop. They wind up looking longer with the lighter color behind them.
Paired with the double winged eyeliner, you have a beautiful and bold makeup look.
Sometimes it’s not the color of the eyeliner or eyeshadow, but rather the way you apply the makeup.
You can totally skip the eyeliner and still achieve a gothic makeup look in just the way you line the eyes.
Using eyeshadow as eyeliner gives you that effect, especially when you apply it heavily underneath the eyes. Even though it’s not black or even that dark, the extra color under the eyes gives it that edge.
Don’t be afraid to experiment. That’s why makeup is so fun! Everyone has a different face which means a different canvas and different looks for all.
Find the look that looks amazing with your own face and makes you feel happy. Or gloomy. Whatever you want.
And if you were wondering what eyeshadow palettes work best for your zodiac sign, you can read about that here.
What about your nails? If you’re bored of regular black nail polish, I make a beautiful matte black nail polish as well as a sheer black glass nail polish which you can find here.
I love the goth vibe but I get bored with just basic black all the time so I like to make nail polish and makeup looks that are black based but unique in some way.
Have fun if you try these and let me know what you think!
